Castellón villages with medieval castles

November

The province of Castellón offers spectacular landscapes and historical places that you can enjoy during your stay at Bonterra Resort.

Although Benicàssim is located on the Mediterranean coast, our area stands out for the presence of a wide mountainous orography in which you can find wonderful natural landscapes and picturesque towns with a lot of history.

That is why today we will talk about three charming towns that you can visit for their beauty and their historical route: Vilafamés, Culla and Morella.

Vilafamés

Declared a Site of Cultural Interest on April 22, 2005. Vilafamés makes us fall in love when walking through its historic center, whose Arab features are manifested in its narrow zigzagging streets as well as in its stone buildings.

To visit it, we suggest you charge yourself with energy since its streets are sloping and with infinite steps that will take you to its highest point, with its castle as the icing on the cake.

Something very characteristic of Vilafamés, and where all its visitors take a compulsory photo, is its “Roca Grossa”, a 2,600-ton rock with an age of 222 million years and an immovable position on a 30º slope; quite a visual spectacle.

Culla

Belonging to the Alto Maestrazgo (Alt Maestrat), Culla is a medieval town whose beginnings date back to the Muslim period and which was a strategic territory, both for its location bordering between the kingdoms of Valencia and Aragon, and for its altitude on a hill to 1088 meters.

Culla was conquered from the Arabs in 1243 by Jaime I and bought by the Templars in 1303 in order to make it a key place for the expansion of Christianity.

Its castle was of great importance to defend the enclave, until in the Carlist Wars of the XIX century it was destroyed.

We suggest you take a walk through the streets of this beautiful town and discover its views as well as the great historical, architectural and cultural heritage that will not leave you indifferent.

Morella

The medieval jewel of our province, and that you must visit at least once in your life, is Morella, capital of the Els Ports region.

The views of the town from a distance, with its imposing castle on top of the hill, as well as its historic center, its architecture and its cobbled streets, have made Morella qualify as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain and that it even opted to be declared a World Heritage Site.

In addition, Morella stands out for its wonderful gastronomy, so if you like local, artisan and quality products, we suggest that you do not return without tasting its cheeses, its typical “flaons” or cottage cheese cakes, its meats or its delicious mushrooms and black truffles.

And did you know that Morella is one of the areas in which more dinosaur remains have been found located between the Upper Jurassic and the Lower Cretaceous, between 146 and 98 million years ago? In its museum “Tiempo de Dinosaurios” you can discover this fascinating prehistoric world and observe real bones of dinosaurs that populated this area.

If you like inland tourism, gastronomy, history and discovering new towns during your stay at Bonterra Resort, we suggest that you do not miss these three wonderful destinations in the province of Castellón.
