Patron saint festivals

The town celebrates its history and tradition

Benicàssim is strongly rooted in its culture, history and tradition and reflects this through its patron saint festivals, which are held at two different times of the year.

The first is dedicated to San Antonio Abad and Santa Águeda, and is celebrated from the 16th of January, while the second comes in the week of the 22nd of September, in honour of its patron saint, Santo Tomás de Villanueva.

Therefore, the two local festivals in Benicàssim are dedicated to their patron saints San Antonio Abad and Santo Tomás de Villanueva and are celebrated on the 17th of January and the 22nd of September.

FESTIVALS OF SAN ANTONIO ABAD AND SANTA ÁGUEDA

These festivities dedicated to the patron saint of animals and the patron saint of Benicàssim include events such as bonfire night and Paella day.

The night of the bonfires and the coqueta is the night of the beginning of the festivities, on the 16th of January. During this night, night bonfires are held on the streets, parades of floats and more than 20,000 “coquetes”, a traditional Benicàssim cake blessed for the Benicàssim people and their animals on the arrival of their patron saint’s day.

The Benicàssim Paella Day is another of the important days celebrated during these fiestas. In fact, it has received the Declaration of Autonomous Tourist Interest of the Valencian Community and has become a festival of national and international interest. During this day thousands of people, fill the streets and restaurants of Benicàssim to eat this traditional dish of our land. A unique and special event, not to be missed.

SAINT THOMAS OF VILLANUEVA FESTIVITIES

The Fiestas of Santo Tomás de Villanueva are dedicated to the patron saint of Benicàssim, after whom the town’s church was named.

These festivities are held during the week of 22 September and are noted for their open-air dances, concerts, bullfighting events, monumental paellas and multiple leisure activities for children and adults.

If you visit Bonterra Resort during these days, do not miss the traditional closing and farewell of the fiestas with pyrotechnic shows and fireworks.
