On the 25th of October from the Bonterra campsite we made an excursion to the wonderful town of Peñíscola. Our winter Bonterrers were able to enjoy a sunny day in a film destination.

Peñíscola has been the setting for films such as Game of Thrones, El Cid, Calabuch or the most recent series “El chiringuito de Pepe”. But Peñíscola is not only known for this beautiful postcard. If you are looking for a destination that combines the rich history of Spain with the beauty of the Mediterranean coast, this is undoubtedly Peñíscola. This charming coastal town, located in the province of Castellón, is a real treasure that captivates travellers with its rich historical heritage and spectacular seascapes.

One of Peñíscola’s most emblematic treasures is its imposing castle. It is known as the “Gibraltar of the Mediterranean”, this Templar castle stands majestically on a rocky peninsula and offers unparalleled panoramic views of the sea and the town. Strolling along its walls will transport you through centuries of history, while the narrow cobbled streets of the old town invite you to explore its charming shops and restaurants.

Peñíscola beach, awarded the Blue Flag for the quality of its waters and services, is a paradise for sun and sea lovers. Its crystal clear waters and golden sand are ideal for swimming, water sports or simply relaxing in the sun. In addition, the beach has a wide variety of bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the delicious Mediterranean gastronomy.

For history lovers, the old town of Peñíscola is a true open-air museum. Its cobbled streets are lined with well-preserved historic buildings, such as the Church of Santa María, which dates back to the 18th century, or the Casa de las Conchas, known for its façade decorated with seashells. Strolling through these streets is like taking a step back in time.

If you’re looking for an even more in-depth experience, Pope Luna’s castle is a must-see. This papal castle, built in the 13th century, is one of the town’s most emblematic sites and houses a fascinating museum that tells the story of Benedict XIII, Pope Luna, who resided here in the 15th century.

Peñíscola is also famous for its lively nightlife, especially in summer. The squares and streets of the old town come alive after dark, with bars and terraces where you can enjoy cocktails and tapas while listening to live music.

In short, Peñíscola is a destination that combines history, natural beauty and Mediterranean charm like no other and has already been exploited in numerous films and series. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, explore Spanish history or enjoy the nightlife, this coastal town has it all.

Don’t miss the chance to escape and discover the magic of Peñíscola during your next stay at Bonterra Resort.
