Places of historical and cultural interest

Enrich your visit to Benicàssim

Benicàssim has a great historical and cultural heritage that is still reflected in many places of interest.

During your stay at Bonterra Resort, visiting the following places will help you to learn more about the origins and history of our town.

Tower of San Vicente

The province of Castellón had eighteen towers located along the coast that served as a defence against corsair attacks.

The Tower of San Vicente, surrounded by a spectacular garden by the sea, dates from the 16th century and is one of the best preserved in the province.

In 2019 restoration work was carried out and the tower was converted into an Interpretation Centre, where you can make daily visits to the tower and discover its history through virtual reality.

The Villas Promenade

The villas of Benicàssim are known as the ‘Valencian Biarritz’, a group of villas from the beginning of the 20th century characterised by their architectural richness and the beauty of their gardens.

According to the artistic trend, the villas of Benicàssim can be divided into three areas: the Zone of Hell, due to the scandalous parties that took place in these villas; the Heavenly Court, known for the tranquillity of its area; and Limbo, due to the garden area that separated them.

Walking along the Bernat Artola and Pilar Coloma promenade, which accompanies them, will offer you a visual spectacle to the left and right, with villas on one side and beaches on the other.

Bodega Carmelitano Museum

Benicàssim stands out as the creator of its herbal liqueur from the Desierto de las Palmas, the Carmelitano liqueur. The Carmelite monks who arrived in our mountains in the 17th century took advantage of the natural richness of the herbs in our area to create a liqueur that has survived to this day.

The Carmelitano winery and distillery is one of the oldest in Spain and today offers a wide range of wines and liqueurs that have won international awards.

If you are interested in finding out more about its history, you can visit the Carmelitano Museum, with daily guided tours that include tastings and the sale of its liqueurs.

Exhibition halls

Benicàssim holds continuous exhibitions of local, national and international artists, who distribute their works in the different halls located in our town:

  • Melchor Zapata. C/ Santo Tomás, 9
  • Sala Escena (Teatro Municipal). Plaza de la Constitución, s/n.
  • Palacete Villa Elisa. Paseo Pilar Coloma, 6.

Cinema, theatre, and music

If during your holidays you want to attend the different cultural events, such as cinema, theatre and musical performances, the Municipal Theatre of Benicàssim Francesc Tárrega offers a permanent programme throughout the year. Its location is at Plaza de la Constitución, s/n.

In addition, for open-air performances by the sea, the Pepe Falomir Amphitheatre is used, located next to the San Vicente Tower, an excellent setting to enjoy multiple performances on summer nights.

Other cultural spaces

In Benicàssim you can also find a public library, in the old town, as well as sea libraries where you can read, rent books, or attend events such as storytelling for children.

These libraries are in Heliópolis beach and in Villa Ana, located in the seafront promenade Pilar Coloma, 35. Here, apart from renting books and reading, there are continuous events such as book presentations or talks.
